  • How you can mitigate the impacts of a a crisis?,
  • What are  critical success factors the different crisis phases
  • How you will use a crisis for growth and development and become a more resilient and future proof organization?

Every crisis doesn’t just have have a huge impact on our daily lives but has the is able to disrupt the very system on which we have built are lives and businesses. They are game changers that can permanently alter the ecosystem we operate in. A crisis of significant magnitude affects every individual an organization around us. It disrupts what we take for granted and forces us to change out daily routines, corporate structures and even our culture.

The good news is that we can mitigate the effects of a crisis via the management discipline of crisis management. Crisis management consists of skills and techniques required to identify, assess, understand, and cope with a serious situation.

Within this training 2 days program, we will go through crisis management phase, from analysis to action and we will understand how to stabilize a crisis situation with participatory methods using an agile approach. Finally, we will experience together how indeed a crisis can indeed be a good teacher, and help us to develop our resilience.

The Management and Mitigation Phase

Every crisis is  characterized by 4 common elements:

  1. It is a threat to the organization / society
  2. It contains the element of surprise,
  3. It requires urgent action and rapid decision making,
  4. It is a process of transformation in which the old system can no longer be maintained.

Because of these crucial elements, crisis management differs completely from traditional project management approaches.First of all there is a need to understand the system and the changes that ar taking place as quickly as possible. The inital analysis might very well be the most important phase of crisis management. This phase is characterized by many assumptions, key indicators, and dynamics across multiple channels. Assessing this new reality quickly is critical in ensuring an appropriate and rapid response.

What can you do in this phase in order to learn and adapt, and thus make your organization as flexible as possible? First ensure these key prerequisites are in place:

  • An accurate system overview and analysis (inclding al stakeholders)
  • A clear strategy that is well understood by critical teams
  • Clear prioritization aligned with your new strategic position
  • A team of teams working with an agile mindset (including informal leaders)

The Post-Crisis Phase

Many organizations forget about the post-crisis phase, but this is a crucial time for learning. Your organization now has to live with the decisions made during the crisis mitigation phase. Ensuring the learnings from this period of stress are embedded in the organization will go a long way towards ensuring organizational readiness for new system shocks.

After the crisis, there will be a need for re-organization, re-allocation of resources, re-building the internal and external relations,etc..  The post crisis phase is characterized by two key issues:

  • Facing all the decisions that you made during the crisis,
  • Preparing your organization better for the next shocks; meaning to develop organizational resilience.

Resilience is a quality within organizations which allows them to manage crises and disruption to operations, resist sudden shocks and adapt to changes. Organizational resilience is a function of an organization’s overall situation awareness, management of keystone vulnerabilities, and adaptive capacity.

Understanding your own organization well is a keystone in effective crisis management. If we truly understand our organization and the position it is in, our reactions will be a function of the next-best use of our time and values. The combined result is systemic advantage. In order to help you gauge your organization’s current position and readiness we are happy to offer you out resilience assessment tool. Asessing your organization’s readiness will provide you with a clear perspective on where your organization is adequately prepared, and where improvements can be made.

In short, in a complex, dynamic and interconnected environment, a crisis is a matter of ‘when’, not ‘if’! How well your organization has prepared and how quickly it is able to respond is a key differentiator in handling a crisis well. Depending on the severity of the crisis your organization is facing, this may hand an advantage to your competitors or even threaten the very existence of your organization.
